Babble and Thought Bubble 2011

Thought Bubble Logo

The final major UK comic convention of 2011 is almost upon us in the shape of Thought Bubble, the annual Leeds comic art festival. The event runs from 14th-20th November, and this year the main convention has been expanded to a two day event, with a huge mixture of people from the UK comics scene, and, of course, some special guests from across the pond. Our publishing overlords Com.X will be there, too, selling their wares and promoting their upcoming books.

We’ve had a long discussion about getting some previews of Babble ready for the con, and we’ve come to a pretty difficult decision: we’re not going to be having any on display with Com.X.

It’s not something we’ve taken lightly, but the main reasons behind it are pretty simple: we’re so very, very close to the end that it almost seems counter productive to stop now and go back to re-edit preview pages. However, I – Lee – will be there at the con, wandering the floor on Saturday, so if you’re so inclined, come and find me and ask me anything you want to about Babble. Not much of a consolation for the lack of previews, I know, but, hey.

However, if you absolutely must have some of our pre-Babble collaborations in your possession, Accent UK will be there, too, selling their anthologies Robots, Western and Predators – all of which feature strips by us!

And, if you want more of our work, head on over to the FutureQuake booth and grab yourself a copy of the latest issue of Zarjaz, where you’ll find ABC Warriors: Broken Dreams by us! Just look out for this rather scrotnig cover from Staz Johnson!

So, if you’re heading to Thought Bubble this year, be sure and grab copies of all four! And maybe even swing by the Com.X booth and ask them about Babble.

Zarjaz #13 Out NOW!

Word has reached us that Zarjaz #13 has been released – and features the long promised ABC Warriors strip from us!

The story, Broken Dreams, features Hammerstein, the fearless leader of the ABC Warriors, in a solo story that takes a look at what happens on his downtime missions, as he forces himself to relax and prepare for whatever challenges the galaxy will throw at him. It’s a little bit of an off-beat story, and features a couple of cameos from Hammerstein’s past…

Broken Dreams (and these other Ghafflebette stories) can be found under this rather scrotnig cover by Staz Johnson:

Zarjaz #13 is available from the FutureQuake Shop, priced £3.00 (plus P&P) Earth money. Or, if you want to grab your copy from a bricks and mortar shop, you can get it from your local Forbidden Planet International store and Orbital Comics in London! So go and do yourself a favour and discover why Zarjaz is, indeed, The Galaxy’s Greatest Fanzine! And, as always, for all your Zarjaz – and Dogbreath – news, check out The Quaequam Blog – but remember to set your browsers for maximum Thrill Power!

All of the FQP titles will also be available at the Thought Bubble convention, taking place on 19th-20th November in Leeds.

The Babble Project: Whistler

Whistler

Whistler created by Bolt-01. Art by Bolt-01, colours by Bryan Coyle

This week, we take on a 2000AD-esque flavour as we introduce Search/Destroy agent and stalwart of the 2000AD fanzines, Whistler!

Whistler was originally created by comics making machine Bolt-01 (a.k.a. artist/letter and art editor/publisher of FutureQuake Publications Dave Evans) for Dogbreath, the Strontium Dog fanzine. As all good characters seem to do, Whistler has pretty much taken on a life of his own and made  cameos in a multitude of Dogbreath strips – and even managed to find his way into the pages of 2000AD, courtesy of Carlos Ezquerra!

Bolt-01 has been a great supporter of our small press work down the years (and was the man responsible for first pairing us up oh-so many moons ago!), so it was a no-brainer to ask him to get involved in this. Thankfully, he managed to take some time out from creating some of the best small press anthologies money can buy to provide us with this weeks image.

For more information about FutureQuake Publications, be sure and check out their website and their shop; for news and updates, check out the FQP Blog. For news and updates on the 2000AD fanzines Zarjaz and Dogbreath (published by FQP), check out The Quaequam Blog.

Other Stuff…

A very quick post to let anyone who’s interested in such things know what’s going on with the two projects we’ve got lined up for Zarjaz and Accent UK. As anyone who’s been reading this blog for any length of time will know (and I can’t imagine there’s many of you), we have two other short comic strips complete and in the bag, and it looks like they’ll be seeing the light of day later this year…

Accent UK’s much delayed anthology Predators has been accepted by Diamond and will be in the July issue of Previews. We have a short strip in there called Just Like You, which looks a bit like this:

We’ll have a more in-depth post about this (including order numbers and price) in due course.

ABC Warriors: Broken Dreams, on the other hand, is due to appear in Zarjaz #13, due out in November 2011. And here’s a sneaky peek:

Again, we’ll post something more when we have more concrete details.

And what’s next for you guys, I hear you cry? Well, give us a chance to get Babble out of the door, eh?

We’re still alive!

Yes, it’s true! We are still alive and working hard on getting the book together, as well as some other projects… For the moment, though, here’s some work-in-progress images for you…

And those other projects we’re working on? Well, Lee’s working on a new OGN for Accent UK called Chosen, and here’s a little something from an upcoming Zarjaz! strip by Bryan and Richmond Clements…

SHAKO!!

And, Bryan and Lee are teaming up again for an upcoming issue of Zarjaz!, starring a couple of 2000AD stalwarts. More on that later.
